Tuney Tuesday: Mean by Taylor Swift

Tuney Tuesdays is a weekly meme that JB Kantt at J.A.Y.A.! and I at ***Singing and Reading in the Rain*** host. It's really easy! Just:
  • Once a week, on Tuesday, choose a song that you might be really into that particular week.
  • Include a video/cover art for that single if there is one (or the button for Tuney Tuesdays that I've made up. I'll put it later in the post.)
  • Include the lyrics
  • Write what you like about it in a review. Or write a few sentences about how it inspires you. Or how it relates to a book that you've been reading.
  • If you don't want to do your own song, you can use one of the songs that I or JB Kantt atJ.A.Y.A.! have done for this week!

Rating: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Lyrics
You, with your words like knives and swords and weapons that you use against me
You have knocked me off my feet again got me feeling like I'm nothing
You, with your voice like nails on a chalkboard, calling me out when I'm wounded
You, pickin' on the weaker man

Well, you can take me down with just one single blow
But you don't know what you don't know

Someday I'll be living in a big old city
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Someday I'll be big enough so you can't hit me
And all you're ever gonna be is mean

Why you gotta be so mean?

You, with your switching sides and your walk-by lies and your humiliation
You, have pointed out my flaws again as if I don't already see them
I'll walk with my head down trying to block you out 'cause I'll never impress you
I just wanna feel okay again

I'll bet you got pushed around, somebody made you cold
But the cycle ends right now 'cause you can't lead me down that road
And you don't know what you don't know

Someday I'll be living in a big old city
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
Someday I'll be big enough so you can't hit me
And all you're ever gonna be is mean

Why you gotta be so mean?

And I can see you years from now in a bar, talking over a football game
With that same big loud opinion but nobody's listening
Washed up and ranting about the same old bitter things
Drunk and grumbling on about how I can't sing

But all you are is mean
All you are is mean and a liar and pathetic and alone in life
And mean, and mean, and mean, and mean

But someday I'll be living in a big old city
And all you're ever gonna be is mean, yeah
Someday, I'll be big enough so you can't hit me
And all you're ever gonna be is mean

Why you gotta be so mean?

Someday, I'll be, living in a big old city
(Why you gotta be so mean?)
And all you're ever gonna be is mean
(Why you gotta be so mean?)
Someday, I'll be big enough so you can't hit me
(Why you gotta be so mean?)
And all you're ever gonna be is mean

Why you gotta be so mean?

Review
I think this is a perfect song. Taylor wrote this because she was performing a song once with another fellow country star, Miranda Lambert, I believe, and she sang the entire song off-key. And this one critic found it necessary to tear into her and broadcast to the world that she'd destroyed her career in four minutes. Well, she did quite the opposite. In fact, she made herself even more popular by receiving tons and tons of music awards with that song and performing at multiple award shows, including the Grammys.

Not only are the lyrics really relatable and really strong, they also tell a story, saying that no matter what you may put me through, I'm going to jump back and I'm going to get stronger every time. And that I can feed off all your hate, and I can turn it into something great and magical. That's what Taylor Swift did with this song, and I'm not just saying it because I'm a really big fan, but I truly believe that this songs is true and totally great.

These lyrics are really catchy, and Taylor sings them with such a great voice. Obviously, since she wrote them, she fine-tuned the lyrics so that they matched her voice, and I love how she sang it and what she did with this song. Seriously, I don't know how some songwriters come up with these tunes. It's such a pain for me to think up a new tune, and imagine doing that fifty something times! (Taylor wrote that many songs for the rough copy of her album, and then only fourteen made it through. It's just like writing a book, right?)

So that's it! But tell me what you think of this song, and if you ever want to participate, don't hesitate to try! I'd love to hear your thoughts on all the songs out there!

  1. I reviewed this song a couple weeks ago, and I still love it now as much as I did then (if not more) :D
